Vineyards and Terroir

When we began planting vineyards in the late 1990s, we chose to focus on the high-altitude lands of Ribera del Duero in Burgos and Segovia.

Today, we have 40 hectares of vineyards, all located at over 900 metres above sea level. These elevated, breezier, and cooler areas provide us with high-quality grapes that add freshness and acidity to our wines.

We also decided to distribute our vineyards across various locations to leverage the unique qualities of different soils.

These diverse soil types yield uniquely expressive wines, enabling us to select grapes from each specific soil based on the desired wine profile. Additionally, we can blend grapes from various soils to craft wines with distinct and precise organoleptic characteristics.

We also produce single-vineyard wines from special plots. These wines are made exclusively from grapes grown in a specific area with highly characteristic soils, resulting in very distinctive wines.

Our Vineyards in

Fuentenebro, Burgos

In recent years, Fuentenebro has become one of the most regarded wine-growing regions in Ribera del Duero

Bodegas Vetusta was one of the first wineries in Ribera del Duero to recognise Fuentenebro’s great potential for producing outstanding wines. In the late 1990s, we began planting our vineyards El Carrascalón, El Bosque, and Los Pájaros here.

In Fuentenebro, there are very diverse soils. Combined with the altitude, which sits at around 1000 metres and the constant breeze in this area, these factors allow us to produce fresher wines where the fruit takes centre stage.

Carrascalón BAJO

Our El Carrascalón plot covers 4 hectares, where we cultivate the Tempranillo grape variety.

El Carrascalón Bajo – Situated at 990 metres above sea level.

Its red soils, composed of clay, stones, and minerals, impart a very characteristic acidity to the wines, along with intense red fruit flavours.

From this vineyard we produce Vetusta Viñas de Fuentenebro, a highly distinctive wine that conveys the freshness, acidity and strong personality of these soils.

CARRASCALÓN ALTO

El Carrascalón Alto is a very unique plot that is situated at 1000 metres above sea level.

Its soils are stonier and more mineral-rich compared to those of Carrascalón Bajo. This, combined with its location at the highest and breeziest part of Fuentenebro, allows for much slower grape ripening.

From this vineyard, we obtain loose clusters with a lower grape load that are better ventilated.

These very special grapes are vinified separately, resulting in our single-vineyard wine, Vetusta Carrascalón Alto.

Vetusta Carrascalón Alto is a wine with a distinctive acidity and intense red fruit. We use minimal extraction to preserve the fruit’s purity and age it in new oak barrels for several years to reach its full potential.

Los pájaros

Los Pájaros is located at the same altitude as El Carrascalón Alto, at 1000 metres above sea level, but it is younger as it was planted in 2016.

Its surface soil is very stony, with Fuentenebro’s characteristic red clay beneath. As it matures, we begin to see its great potential for producing age-worthy wines.

El bosque

Our vineyard, El Bosque, covers 6 hectares and is also located in Fuentenebro, at an altitude of 950 metres above sea level.

The soil’s acidic pH, which is very uncommon in Ribera del Duero, makes this vineyard special. Additionally, the soil is entirely covered with pebbles, which helps to better ripen the grapes.

The grapes from this vineyard contribute “colour” to our wines.

Our Vineyards in

Honrubia de la Cuesta, Segovia

Honrubia de la Cuesta is one of the three towns in Segovia that fall within the DO Ribera del Duero.

Here, we encounter soils rich in minerals, in vineyards that sit at a significant altitude.
At Bodegas Vetusta, we chose to revive old vineyards in this area as well as plant new ones several decades ago.

We now manage 14 hectares of vineyards across three distinct plots: El Tallar, El Tallar 2, and Valdebiterna.

El Tallar

El Tallar vineyard covers five hectares and is located in Honrubia de la Cuesta, Segovia, at an altitude of 1,040 metres.

Planted in 2019, it sits on a clay-loam soil rich in minerals such as quartz and mica. Here, we cultivate Tempranillo and also Cabernet Sauvignon, a less common variety in Ribera del Duero.

The grapes from this plot impart a distinctive mineral quality and a fresh, vibrant character to our wines, reflecting the essence of these high-altitude regions in Ribera del Duero.

El Tallar 2

This four-hectare vineyard was planted in 2020 during the pandemic lockdown, symbolising our resilience, passion and commitment to cultivating the land and ensuring the region’s future.

In this planting, we pushed the boundaries of technical precision, as it is situated on a slope with an incline of over 20%.

The vineyard employs three different training methods: bush, trellised, and vertically trained bush vines.

Additionally, we grow three distinct grape varieties—Albillo Mayor, Tempranillo, and Garnacha—each facing different aspects of the slope, ensuring optimal ripening and expression of each variety.

Valdebiterna

Planted in 2020, the five-hectare Valdebiterna vineyard sits at an altitude of over 1,000 metres. It thrives on a less fertile, stony soil that yields low but exceptionally high-quality grapes.

This challenging terrain offers a remarkable basis from which to craft truly outstanding wines.

Our Vineyard in

Montejo de la Vega, Segovia

Montejo de la Vega is one of the three Segovian towns within the DO Ribera del Duero.

Here, we have our oldest vineyard, a quintessential old Ribera del Duero plot where various grape varieties grow in a seemingly random mix, with Albillo Mayor being the most predominant.

This vineyard is a real gem, as very few such old vineyards remain in Ribera del Duero, and even fewer feature Albillo Mayor—a native variety that some, like Bodegas Vetusta, have saved from extinction.

From this plot´s grapes we produce our Vetusta Albillo Mayor, a gastronomic white wine aged on its lees for approximately 8 months.

Our Vineyard in

Aranda de Duero > Hoyo verde

Hoyo Verde is the first vineyard that we planted in 1998, making it our second oldest vineyard after Montejo de la Vega.

Spanning 7 hectares, it is located in Aranda de Duero, with soils that vary from loamy-sandy in some areas to very sandy in others.

This soil composition is ideal for producing the characteristic “Tinto Fino” grapes of our denomination. Hoyo Verde embodies the true essence of Ribera del Duero, which is reflected in the distinctive quality of our wines.

Our Vineyard in

Moradillo de Roa > Haza

Haza is a 4-hectare vineyard located in the Corcos plateau, at an elevation of over 900 metres above sea level.

The stony soil, which includes a calcareous component, combined with the extreme climatic conditions of this plateau, creates a distinctive terroir.

Just as the expansive plateau offers a panoramic view of the horizon, the wines from Haza contribute remarkable “longevity” to our wines.

Our Vineyard in

Santa Cruz de la Salceda > Los Hoyos

Los Hoyos is a 4-hectare vineyard located in Santa Cruz de la Salceda, on the eastern edge of Ribera del Duero.

Planted in 2005, it sits at an elevation of 930 metres, with a soil composition of limestone rock and fine sands.

As our least vigorous vineyard, it yields only about 4,000 kg/ha and produces small berries of exceptional quality.

Surrounded by wild terrain, Los Hoyos imparts a most distinctive “aroma” to our wines.
